Middle school is the stage most parents brace for, and it's easy to see why. Almost overnight, your child becomes a preteen with bigger feelings, stronger opinions, growth spurts, and a much larger grocery bill. One minute they're sleeping with a stuffed animal, the next they're slamming a door. No stage has less consistency. But this season is not something to survive, or get through quickly. It's likely one of the most strategic windows you'll ever have.
Behind all the change is one big theme: identity. Your sixth grader is asking, "Who do I like?" Your seventh grader is asking, "Who am I?" Your eighth grader is asking, "Who do I want to be?" These are the years your child starts deciding what they really believe and whether faith is truly their own. Your role is to affirm their personal journey: consistency has never been more important, prove you can't be pushed away, and provide steady stability while they figure it out. This is the patient work of pruning. A nudge here, a redirection there, all so they grow into who God made them to be.
Your influence might feel quieter now than it used to be, but it is far from gone. Subtle, consistent affirmation in these three years has a way of steering a whole life. Surround them with mentors and a faith community beyond your living room, and keep pointing them toward Jesus. You are preparing them for what comes next.
