There is a simple but powerful truth in Luke 6:43–45 that shapes our faith. Jesus teaches that a tree is known by its fruit. This leads us to a key phrase: “Healthy roots produce holy results.” From the beginning, Jesus calls us to examine what our lives produce. Good fruit does not come from a bad tree. Likewise, bad fruit cannot come from a good tree. Therefore, our focus must move beneath the surface to the heart.
The Fruit Reveals the Root
Jesus explains that each tree is known by its own fruit in Luke 6:44. This means results always reveal the source. In the same way, our actions reveal our inner condition. Furthermore, Jesus connects this idea to discernment, as seen in Matthew 7:16. We are called to recognize truth and error by what is produced. Therefore, we must compare everything to God’s Word. When we do this, we begin to see clearly what is good and what is not.
The Heart Behind the Fruit
Jesus goes deeper by pointing to the heart in Luke 6:45. He teaches that good treasure produces good, while evil treasure produces evil. This shows that behavior is not the starting point. Instead, the heart is the source of everything we do. Consequently, if we want better fruit, we must pursue a better heart. This reinforces our key phrase: “Healthy roots produce holy results.” Transformation always begins internally before it becomes visible externally.
What We Treasure Matters
To understand the heart, we must examine what we treasure. Jesus explains in Matthew 6:21 that our heart follows our treasure. Therefore, what we value shapes who we become. If we prioritize earthly things, our lives reflect that focus. However, when we treasure heavenly things, our hearts begin to change. This shift affects our time, energy, and attention. As a result, our fruit begins to reflect God’s will instead of our own desires.
The Evidence in Our Words
One clear way to evaluate our heart is through our words. Jesus says that the mouth speaks from the abundance of the heart in Luke 6:45. Additionally, Ephesians 4:29 calls us to speak words that build others up. Our speech reveals whether our hearts are aligned with God. Therefore, changing our words requires changing our hearts first. We cannot simply fix behavior without addressing the source. Once again, “Healthy roots produce holy results.”
From Hearing to Doing
Finally, Jesus challenges us in Luke 6:46 by asking why we call Him Lord but do not obey. This question moves us from agreement to action. It is not enough to admire truth; we must live it. A transformed heart must lead to transformed behavior. Therefore, we must not stop at listening or agreeing. Instead, we must act on what Jesus teaches daily. When we do, our lives will bear fruit that reflects Him.
