more about our church

Sometimes we miss what is right in front of us. This truth also applies to our faith, especially when it comes to recognizing Jesus beyond expectations. In Luke 4:14–21, Jesus reads Isaiah’s prophecy and declares its fulfillment. The people of Nazareth heard His words but struggled to see His identity. Their expectations blinded them to God’s chosen Messiah.

Why Nazareth Missed the Messiah

At first, Jesus amazed the synagogue with His teaching. Yet their excitement faded when they remembered His background. They asked, “Is this not Joseph’s son?” (Luke 4:22). Their familiarity weakened their faith. Even though Scripture pointed to Him, they refused to accept His authority. Consequently, their expectations prevented true understanding.

The Prophecy Jesus Fulfilled

However, Jesus made His mission unmistakably clear. He read Isaiah 61:1–2 and applied it to Himself. He proclaimed good news, freedom, healing, and hope. This prophecy pointed directly to the Messiah’s saving work. Additionally, Jesus later referenced these same signs when responding to John the Baptist in Matthew 11:4–5. Scripture confirmed His identity long before Nazareth rejected Him.

When Expectations Distort Our Faith

We often repeat Nazareth’s mistake. We carry assumptions about who we think Jesus should be. Sometimes we want comfort instead of sacrifice. Other times we prefer blessings without obedience. When this happens, we risk recognizing Jesus beyond expectations instead of recognizing Him through Scripture. As Hebrews 1:1–2 explains, God now speaks through His Son, not through our desires.

Learning to Listen to Jesus

Therefore, we must listen carefully to Jesus even when His teaching challenges us. God emphasized this truth at the Transfiguration. During that moment, He said, “This is my beloved Son…listen to Him” (Matthew 17:5). When we submit our expectations, God opens our eyes to deeper truth. This posture helps us see Jesus clearly and respond with faith.

A Call to Realign Our Hearts

Nazareth missed the Messiah because He did not fit their mold. We face the same danger today. Yet Jesus continues to call us into genuine discipleship. When we humble ourselves, Scripture reshapes our vision and strengthens our trust. As we embrace recognizing Jesus beyond expectations, we discover the Savior as He truly is. And through Him, we find salvation, hope, and new life.

more about our church

I began my time with the Peachtree City Church of Christ as a church member. The shepherds brought me on staff, and over the years, the needs of the church have changed and so has my position. Today, I am the preaching minister. My time with this church and its leadership has been a treasure, and I'm looking forward to many more years in His service.

I have been fortunate to call this church home for more than twenty years. As my family has grown, our church family has been gracious in supporting us and caring so well for our two sons.

I can tell you that the Peachtree City Church is unique. We'd love to hear your needs, because this might be the church for you.

This might be the church for you...
